Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is iConji?

At the very foundation, iConji is a system for communication in a digital age. iConji is designed to move effortlessly between any two people who have access to a web browser or digital communications device, independent of their native language.

Q: What if you do not support my native language?

Any community member who is proficient in his or her native language, and who has time and capacity to provide a translation of the iConji vocabulary, is more than welcome to contribute to the translation of iConji. Learn more ...

Q: Is iConji a language translator? Why not use Babelfish?

iConji is not designed nor intended to be used as a full language-to-language translator. Rather, iConji is a very simple, enjoyable means of communicating with people who also share your native language, or as a means of communicating directly with someone of a language which you do not understand. Because iConji is very simple, that is, it does not concern itself (nor its users) with conjugation, gender, nor anything but the very basic tense (past, present, or future), translators will always have their place and function.

iGoogle and Babelfish work (and we're big fans of Douglas Adams!), but iConji is more colorful, fun, and creative. What's more, iConji shaves a step off the inter-language communication process. Instead of: You --> Babelfish --> Friend, it's as simple as You --> Friend.

Q: Is iConji just a bunch of emoticons? Is iConji like Emoji?

iConji is a full communication system, not just a collection of icons representing emotions. But yes, iConji does include characters for a number of emotions, similar to emoticons. Emoji has grown and matured, and is similiar to iConji in that you may now communicate a wide variety of emotions and subjects with Emoji. However, Emoji characters do not carry specific nor multiple language definitions. iConji is designed to build full sentences using only iConji characters, while Emoji characters may be used as substitute for particular words in a given sentence.

In addition, if you desire, you may designate nouns and adjective, verbs, adverbs and verb tense, possessives, and add notes to one or more characters sent, such as the location of where you desire to meet someone.

Q: Why be an iConji author?

There are several answer to this:

  • Because it is really an amazing experience to be a part of something as exciting as building a visual language.
  • Because it is even more fun to watch as your character is used first by your friends, and then their friends, and then the friends of your friends' friends, into the hands and minds and vocabularies of iConji users around the world.
  • Because without any formal training or expertise in linguistics or art you may contribute to the world's largest, contiguous art and language project, your name and the story of how you created your character forever associated with your contribution.

Now that is very, very cool.
